I have recently received an email stating that I have been awarded $1800.00 for the summer 2009 language study program in Southern Italy. I would love to personally express my gratitude, but since that is not possible I would like to take the time to thank you in this letter. With the money I have received I am that much closer to my dream of studying abroad. Becoming an AFSer I hope to gain an experience of a life time, and come back a more educated, independent, and stronger student and person. I will make sure to maintain a blog that reflects my AFS experience. I am very excited to finally attain a goal of mine and learn the Italian culture and language!

Mi nombre es Elsie Paulino, estoy en mi tercer año del bachillerato asistiendo a la Escuela Secundaria de Lindenhurst, en Nueva York. Yo quisiera aprovechar la oportunidad de asistir al programa AFS, para el verano 2009, a un viaje a Italia. Estoy muy determinada para realizar este viaje, sobre todo porque estoy interesada en aprender el lenguaje Italiano. He estado tomando clase italiano durante tres años y estoy lista para explorar la cultura y adelantar mas mi educación. Soy una estudiante trabajadora y muy disciplinada, también estoy en el alto porcentaje de mi clase. He estado esperando una oportunidad de viajar y estudiar con este programa y después de muchas semanas de investigación constante y evaluación profunda, el programa AFS se ha convertido en un sueño para mí. He estado trabajando con mi profesor de italiano, tratando de encontrar el mejor programa. Lamentablemente, por lo economico no he sido, y sigo no siendo, tan afortunada. Busco desesperadamente un trabajo, pero durante estos tiempos económicos difíciles, ha sido imposible hasta ahora, pero seguiré intentando. Yo estaría enormemente decepcionada si por razones economica no asisto este programa después de trabajar con tantas fuerzas.

Soy una persona muy ocupada que hace mi aspiración aún más difícil. Actualmente tomo dos cursos de AP y también un curso de Dowling, que son clases universitarias. Yo estoy en todas las clases de honores y siempre estoy en la Lista de Principal en la escuela. Soy actualmente parte de muchas actividades extraescolares, como, Key Club, National Honor Society, DECA, Student Council. Soy también una tutora en matemáticas, y soy una participante activa de mi parroquia, lo e sido durante cinco años. Como pueden ver, estoy acostumbrado a trabajar mucho a lo qué me propongo. Esta es una oportunidad a la que no puedo dejar ir aunque lo intente. Mi familia no pueden concederme este deseo por el cual he estado rezando y esto realmente los afecta porque ellos quisieran darme este regalo. Este viaje para mí no es una vacación, pero una oportunidad que apreciaré y recordaré siempre. Esta es una posibilidad para abrirme al mundo, y crecer como una persona. Una posibilidad para prosperar en muchos puntos de vista, haciéndome más valioso en muchas áreas como las universidades, empleos, y mi familia. Siempre pienso en mi futuro y maneras que puedo hacerlo más brillante. Espero que usted sea capaz de ver esto por este poco de información y sea capaz de patrocinarme.

My name is Elsie Paulino, I am in 11th grade attending Lindenhurst High School, in New York. I would love the opportunity to attend the abroad program with AFS, for the summer 2009, trip to Italy. I am very serious about this trip, mostly because I am very serious about learning the language. I have been taking Italian classes for three years now and I am ready to explore the culture and further educate myself. I am a very disciplined and hard working student and I am at the top percent of my class. I have been hoping for an opportunity to travel and study abroad and after weeks of constant research and deep evaluation, the AFS program sounds like a dream for me. I have been working with my Italian teacher, trying to find the best program that meets my financial as well as my objective need. Unfortunately, financially I have not been, and continue to not be, so lucky. I am desperately looking for a job, but during these difficult economic times, it has been impossible thus far. I will keep trying as much as I can. I would be greatly disappointed if I am unable to attend this summer program after working so hard.
I am a very busy person which makes my aspiration even more difficult. I am currently taking on the challenge of two AP courses as well as a Dowling course. I am in all honors and have always been on the Principle’s List. I am currently part of many extracurricular activities, such as, Key Club, National Honor Society, DECA, Student Council. I am also currently a tutor in math, and I am an active participant of my parish, have been for five years now. As can be seen, I am accustomed to working hard for what I set my mind to. This is an opportunity I can not let go of as much as I try to. My family just can not afford to grant me this wish that I have been praying for and it really affects them because they would love to give me this gift. This trip for me is not a vacation but an opportunity that I will cherish and remember always. It is a chance to open myself to the world, and grow as a person. A chance to prosper in many ways, making myself more valuable to many areas such as colleges, jobs, and my family. I am always thinking about my future and ways that I can make it brighter. I hope you are able to see this through this bit of information and are able to sponsor me.
